If you live in France (or even if you don’t; make a trip of it), there are various Anglo-French literary events going on this year. First up is the Charroux Literary Festival, a biennial event that takes place from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th August this year. Charroux is located in the Vienne Département, north-west of Limoges in western-central France.
Booking is open and if you book and pay for your sessions before midnight this Friday, 21st July, you qualify for an earlybird discount of 20%. You can also get a one, two or three day pass giving access to all the sessions on the day(s) for which you’ve booked.
I’m very much looking forward to this for a number of reasons. First, I’ve been invited to lead a workshop on developing three-dimensional characters on the Saturday of the festival. Kate Rose, who is one of the festival organisers, was kind enough to invite me to be the guest at a literary lunch last year and I’m delighted to be going back to the area.
Second, there are some tasty literary treats on offer. Have a look at the programme to get the full range of events. Highlights are two sessions by acclaimed historical fiction author Barbara Erskine (Lady of Hay, etc.) and two by literary agent and author Andrew Lownie, who will talk about his recent book on Guy Burgess.
Plus there’s a range of sessions, workshops and evening entertainment and a pop-up bookshop and author signing sessions.
Finally, I’m looking forward to getting together again with writing and literary friends who live in France. Since there aren’t that many of us Anglophone writers in France, we tend to know each other and events like this are a great opportunity for catching up.
Down here in SW France, there’s also an annual Anglo-French literary festival at Parisot in the Tarn-et-Garonne Département. I was one of the founding members of the team, although other commitments mean I’m no longer involved. The dates are Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd October and I’ll give more info nearer the time.
